Please join us on December 6th to learn how we can receive and support folks as they look to settle here with their families.
There are always some folks in congregations who have this work on their heart. R.A.I.C. offers many ways for congregations to engage either individually or as a church group. “The multi-cultural richness of our communities and the social needs to sustain this is an honest challenge and opportunity in hard but important social work.” Says Pastor Greg Buchanan who brought some of his High School members to Boston to engage with R.I.A.C.
A light lunch will be offered while we listen to and engage with Miriam around the critical work of resettlement. Worship service is from 10:30 am – 11:30am and all are welcome if you care to join us. If not come along for 11:45 am…… lunch will be ready! Parking is available across the street from the church.

Sun10Jan2016Plan to stay after church this Sunday for our first “Spirit, Story, Spark!!!” gathering! We’ll have delicious home-made soup and desserts (made by the Community and Fellowship Ministry and friends) and time to reflect on ways the Spirit has moved through United, and to talk about the Story we are are writing ~ all of which will Spark us going forward! United has a rich and wonderful history and our stories are part of that history ~ and clear evidence of the on-going work of the Spirit. We have events planned through the winter and spring as part of “Spirit, Story, Spark” and hope you’ll be part of them!

Many people equate Christianity with the Religious Right and assume that all Christians share its beliefs and values on issues like biblical inerrancy, gay rights, abortion, creationism, to name only a few. At United we know there is another way to understand and practice Christianity. It’s not enough to say we don’t agree with the Religious Right, though. We need to be able to articulate positively what we do believe. So mark your calendar and plan to join us after worship each Sunday in June for a lively and enlightening conversation on how Progressive Christians understand God, the Bible, and Jesus, and how we put our understanding into practice.

The MACUCC offers trained facilitators to come to churches to lead “Sacred Conversations on Race”: looking at racial tensions through the lens of our faith. Our Mission and Outreach Ministry has arranged for the Rev. Cindy Maybeck, a MACUCC facilitator, to come to United on Sunday October 30th, to preach during worship and to lead our conversation in a program after church. The program is best described as follows:
Through the narrative of a recent event, we will seek to engage the conversation of race in our society. We will begin with feeling - humanizing the often dehumanized story that is stripped by media of its very real content and relationship to our lives. Only then will we move into thinking about the circumstances and realities of race today. Finally, we will open the door to action - briefly beginning a conversation that will then be yours to bring into your life.
We welcome Cindy to our pulpit on the 30th as well as being our facilitator for the program. Cindy is the founder of Spirit Story ministry, and designs original presentations blending scripture telling and storytelling as a way to bring God’s word to life and to inspire the church to move forward in faith with hope and joy. She served as pastor for 14 years at Trinity Church in Northborough and 10 years at Bethany Christian United Parish in Worcester.

It is easy to feel helpless in the face of so much need in our world. We hear daily of refugees desperately needing the most basic things: food, water, shelter; victims of natural disasters suddenly homeless; communities without clean water; children without access to education...the list goes on and on and on.
Through One Great Hour of Sharing, we carry God’s message of love and hope to people in crisis. Seven Christian denominations - American Baptist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Church of the Brethren, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Church of Christ, and Church World Service work together to support the ministries of OGHS.
Your gift to OGHS supports international development initiatives, including annual support for missionaries. Currently there are 4 OGHS supported missionaries and 2 Global Mission Interns working in disaster relief, health care, education, sustainable agricultural development, and refugee support. The offering also funds disaster preparedness and response, and disaster related volunteer initiatives in the U.S.
Our OGHS offering will be received on March 26th. Please prayerfully consider how you can be the hands and heart of Jesus for our sisters and brothers through this offering.

Join us around the piano before service this Sunday! Our goal is simply to enjoy singing together. We’ll learn a simple song together, well enough to sing it as part of worship service. Every voice and every skill level is welcome.

Have you met any saints lately? How would you know if you had? What IS a saint anyways?
"To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." -Romans 1:7
"Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?" -

Pub Theology meets on the first Wednesday of the month. Grab a beverage and put on your thinking caps: What in our Christian faith tradition is relevant to us now? Can you be a Christian without believing everything in the Bible? Join us for fun and stimulating conversation about topics like miracles, sin and salvation, and war and peace. Formal theological training is absolutely not required, just curiosity and an open mind. Free-wheeling conversation is the goal! -

United proudly and properly identifies itself as an Open and Affirming congregation. That is usually taken to mean that all are welcome regardless of their sexual orientation. It certainly means that, but is that all it means? Are there some people to whom we are not open? What about people with different theological or political outlooks? How would we feel if a white supremacist or homophobe started attending worship?
Come and delve more deeply into the ramifications and nuances of being Open and Affirming. Hope to see you there!Pub Theology gathers on the first Wednesday of every month. Sun17Mar201911:45 amIn April of 1963, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr sat in the wilderness of a jail in Birmingham, Alabama. He had been arrested for leading a march of African Americans -- in the heart of the segregated South -- calling for an Easter boycott of white-owned stores. He did this as an act of faith-inspired civil disobedience. The courts had ordered him not to march. He did not have a permit, but his faith led him to march anyway. While in jail, eight white moderate clergymen published an article in The Birmingham News that was critical of Dr. King, his methods, and the marches he organized. In his own handwriting on scrap pieces of newspaper, Dr. King composed a response to the statement of the white clergy in a writing known as the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail."In the social and political wilderness of 2019, Dr. King's words provide as great and poignant a faith challenge as they did in 1963. And so, our special Lenten program this year will be a three-part study of Dr. King's "Letter" - March 10, 17, 31 - led by Rev. Nancy Elder-Wilfred, Rev. Sally Norris, and Rev. Wesley Williams; we will gather immediately after church in the Meeting Room for the program; bring a bag lunch if you want! Here are two websites with the text of the "Letter" so you may begin reading in advance:As part of this program, we are delighted to welcome the Rev. Wesley Williams as our guest preacher on March 31st. Rev. Williams is a retired United Methodist minister whose ministerial heritage extends back to American slavery. He served United Methodist Churches in New England for thirty-seven years before retiring in 2013. In addition to serving local parishes, he served as the urban minister for the United Methodist denomination, primarily in greater Boston, where his ministry concentrated on improving and supporting education for Latino youth, community policing, and cross-cultural, cross racial relationships between churches, both United Methodist and other denominations.Lent is the time when we, as those who seek to follow Jesus, mirror the time he spent in the wilderness. This study will enable us to examine many of the assumptions and perspectives which inform our personal and societal wildernesses, so that we may become more urgent and faith-filled advocates for building the "beloved community" which Jesus calls us to do.
